After some serious highs and lows (thanks Kiwi Experience), we made it to our final City stop in New Zealand… Christchurch!
The most exciting aspect for me was NO MORE HOSTELS, as we were fortunate enough to be able to stay with a friend of Mike’s this time. Even more fortunate was their playboy-mansion-style house with a pool to match – fun for a few days! I know that hostels have their advantages, I really do. But they just aren’t for me and I will pretend no longer. I was thrilled to be free of them. Adios hostels. GOOD RIDDANCE!
Anyway, back to the point. I’m afraid that Christchurch wasn’t a particularly cultural trip for us. We ate out a lot and were very pleasantly surprised by how good the foodie scene is. Mostly, we had a few drinks too many in celebration of Mike’s birthday – adventures which do not need to be relayed (and I’m not even certain if they could be, sorry mum).
Before you shake your head in disappointment, we did indulge in a walking tour of the City and learnt more of the devastating earthquake effects which was really jolting for us, particularly the memorial sites. Having come from a country where earthquakes are very few and far between, it was incredibly interesting to see first hand.
We also wandered around the container mall which is actually really impressive, has a great vibe, and great ice cream!
All in all, Christchurch seems like a pretty bustling City where people work hard and certainly play hard. It was a fun few days to end our journey on; Though not before we took one of our favourite ever day trips to Kaikoura, which is just a short drive away.
P.S. We also met my adorable cousin so I had to pop this photo in ;).
Have you ever visited Christchurch? I’d love to hear about your favourite activities there, let me know in the comments 🙂
